Ted Alley

Ted graduated from the University of Victoria in 2016 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. In his final year with the team he was the Engineering Lead, meaning he oversaw the technical work that went on with the vehicle’s development. His “hands-on” role on the team usually related to electrical and powertrain integration. Ted was especially proud of all of the work that went into the team’s custom accumulator for the 2015-2016 vehicle as it was a project that brought together all the mechanical and electrical skills that he acquired while working on the team. Despite being an experienced alumni now, Ted actually didn’t know anything about cars when he joined in 2012! Where is he now? Only months after graduating from university, Ted was offered, and accepted, a full-time position with Tesla Motors!

Zachary Mazo

Zach has a deep passion for green technology, and has found a home in developing electric vehicles. He enjoys working on both the mechanical and electrical areas of the vehicle, with high interest in the high voltage system. Zach intends on returning to Tesla Motors after graduation, after thoroughly enjoying his time there as an intern. Outside of school and Formula Hybrid, he can be found golfing, camping, or climbing.

Oliver Blow

Oliver graduated from the University of Victoria in 2016 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. During his final year with the team, he took on a key role as the team’s Power Train and Fabrication Lead (2015-2016). He is a friendly and outgoing individual whose experience and passion made him an asset to us and he remains a key resource today! One aspect of the car that he’s particularly proud of is the engine tuning he did for the 2015-2016 vehicle, and his favourite part about being on the team was applying theoretical knowledge to practical uses. What is he doing now? After graduating, Oliver accepted an engineering role with Alta Motors, in California, working on the first truly competitive electric MX and supermoto bikes!

Brandon Hart

Brandon is a talented Electrical Engineer and has been involved with the team since September 2014. Having graduated from the University of Victoria in December 2015, he was the Co-low Voltage Lead for the 2015-2016 team. Brandon was also the team’s unofficial ambassador for new members because of his friendly nature and willingness to spend time teaching foundational concepts in an approachable way. Along with a few other electrical engineering students on the team, Brandon is credited with finishing creating the vehicle’s power distribution system for the 2015-2016 vehicle. Where is he now? After graduating, Brandon accepted a full-time position with GM!

Ryan Johnston

Ryan graduated from the University of Victoria in 2016 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and he had been a valued member of the Hybrid Team since he joined in the spring of 2014. Not only did Ryan contribute to the design and fabrication of the vehicle, but he also advised the team’s administration during his time on the team. One of the projects that Ryan was the most proud of working on was his development of the vehicle’s steering system, for the 2015-2016 vehicle, which he helped create with team members from various disciplines. It was a challenging and rewarding project to work on because the steering geometry had to meet the Formula Hybrid rule constraints, driver’s space constraints, and limited hardware options.

Geoff Scott

Geoff graduated from the University of Victoria in 2016 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and he remains a vital resource to us! In his last year with the team, Geoff took on the role of Suspension and Chassis Lead and ended up working on a little bit of everything. The project that he was the most proud of working on was his design of the anti-roll system for the 2015-2016 team. Geoff joined the us in fall of 2014 after he heard about the team through a club day and came to a meeting. What was his favourite part about being on the team? “Driving a racecar, obviously”.
