It’s been four days since the removal of the preliminary wiring harness, and the tubular steel skeleton of the UVic Hybrid Team’s vehicle has undergone diligent preparation in anticipation of its new paint.
“Everything has been wire wheeled for maximum surface smoothness,” says Geoff Scott, the team’s Chassis and Suspension Lead who painted the frame. “All of the welds have been smoothed down, and the entire frame was worked over with 3M Scotch-Brite pads before being cleansed with acetone,” Geoff continues. This ensures that the frame’s surface is as uncontaminated as possible so as to prevent blemishes from forming once painted.
The frame will be painted with a single stage urethane-based paint. Geoff explains that this type of paint is ideal because it requires no primer coat and is highly durable, containing a built-in hardener. In proper school spirit, the colour of the paint will be UVic dark blue from the University’s Edge colour palette and is sure to look fabulous racing around New Hampshire Motor Speedway during the Formula Hybrid Competition, running May 1st to 5th, 2016.
“We’d like to thank Automotive Sales Co. Ltd. for providing a durable, single-stage urethane paint for us,” says Geoff. “It’s a fantastic product and it looks amazing on the car.”
